Responsible Boating in Florida Waters

Florida has over 1 million registered recreational boats — more than any other state — which means boaters have an enormous impact on our ecosystems. Florida's 4,500 miles of tidal coastline contain some of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems in North America, all accessible by boat. But Florida has lost over 40,000 acres of seagrass in recent decades, and boat propeller scars are one of the leading causes in shallow coastal areas. Responsible boaters who report derelict traps, invasive species, and environmental incidents through apps like Water Sweep are some of our most effective conservation partners. In this lesson, we'll learn how to protect seagrass from prop scars, prevent manatee strikes, navigate speed zones correctly, anchor safely, respect wildlife distancing laws, and become active ocean stewards on the water.
