Pollinators of Florida â The Unsung Heroes
Pollinators are animals that move pollen from one flower to another, enabling plants to reproduce. They are essential to life on Earth â over 75% of flowering plants and 35% of the world's food supply depend on pollinators. Florida hosts an extraordinary diversity of pollinators: over 315 species of native bees, dozens of butterfly species including the iconic Monarch, several hummingbird species, sphinx moths, and even some beetles and flies. Florida's warm climate, diverse plant communities, and year-round growing season make it one of the most important states in the eastern U.S. for pollinator conservation. However, pollinator populations are declining rapidly due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change â threatening both Florida's ecosystems and its $120+ billion agricultural industry.
