🌊 The Lagoon Before Development

What the Indian River Lagoon was like before we changed it — and why understanding the past is the key to restoring the future

The Lagoon Before Development

A pristine estuary of clear water, seagrass meadows, oyster reefs, and abundant life — the benchmark for what the lagoon can be again.

Vast underwater meadows, the four jobs seagrass does, the great die-off, and how it's coming back.

Living breakwaters, nature's water filters, a city underwater — and the living shorelines bringing them back.

One open, free-flowing lagoon, the causeway era, and how longer bridges are opening the flow again.

The great marsh sponge, the canal era, flash floods of pollution, and restoring the slow, clean flow.

The astronomical mosquitoes, their role in the food web, the marsh habitat, and the old name that survives.

The green wall, the mangrove's four superpowers, the clearing, and the living shorelines bringing the forest back.

Wild shifting sand bars, the turtle-nesting cradle, the building boom, and saving what's left of the dark beaches.
